The Philosophy Department offers two separate graduate degree programs, leading to the Ph.D. and the terminal M.A. degrees. A summary of information about the process of applying and various application requirements is available below.

Stanford strongly prefers online applications. Paper applications are only available by written request to the Graduate Admissions Office. There is an additional fee due at the time of request for a paper application.

Application Deadlines
The application must be received by:

Ph.D.: December 4, 2007

M.A.: March 25, 2008

Coterminal M.A. : January 8, 2008
(current Stanford students only)

Coterminal MA

The coterminal M.A. is an internal program available only to current Stanford undergrads. It permits Stanford undergraduates to study for a bachelor's and a master's degree simultaneously, in the same or different departments.

The coterm application packet is available from the Grad Admissions Office or online here.

Required materials for the Philosophy coterm application:

  • 2 letters of recommendation
  • writing sample on a philosophical topic
  • completed coterm application forms
  • statement of purpose (contained in application)

The coterm application deadline is January 8, 2008. Please bring your forms to the graduate administrator's office in Bldg. 90.
Requirements for both M.A. and Ph.D. applicants

This is a summary of the minimum application requirements from the Guide to Graduate Admissions.

  • GRE general test

  • 2 copies of each Transcript

  • Statement of purpose

  • Completed application

  • Fee for application

  • Three letters of recommendation

  • A recent writing sample on a philosophical topic, typically 10-30 pages

    (NOTE: Please mail any paper items (i.e. writing samples, offline letters, transcripts) directly to the dept., rather than the central grad admissions office. See "sending supplementary materials" below. )

  • The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is required of most applicants whose first language is not English. This now includes US citizens as well as international students. Applicants who have received a Bachelors or higher degree from a U.S. school are usually exempted.

Sending Supplementary Materials

Supplementary materials not submitted online (e.g. transcripts, writing samples, or offline letters of recommendation) should be sent directly to the Philosophy department, rather than the central unversity grad admissions office.

Your recommenders are welcome to email, mail, or fax their letters if they prefer not to use the online form.
