Ph.D students admitted to the department receive, as a general rule, five years and two summers of full support, which includes any outside support (i.e. Mellon, NSF). A University fellowship in
combination with five quarters of teaching assistantship (during the second, third and fifth years) pay for tuition and provide a
living stipend.
The normal combination of fellowship and teaching assistantship is as follows:
First year: A student will be on University fellowship for three quarters. No teaching requirement allows full time
for study.
Second year: Student will have one quarter of University fellowship, and two quarters of teaching assistantship.
Third year: Like the second year, a student will be on University fellowship for one quarter, and a teaching
assistantship for two quarters.
Fourth year: The student receives three quarters of full support as a pre-doc affiliate, allowing full focus on dissertation work.
Summers: There are normally two summers of fellowship support, which includes outside fellowships.
Fifth year: Student will have two quarters of University fellowship, and one final quarter of teaching assistantship. |
There is no funding available for M.A. students.
